Home Wiring Setup

> Step 1

The first step to enable this feature is to disconnect your home wiring from the telephone company's lines. If this step is not taken, your home's telephone equipment may be damaged or cause more serious dangers such as a fire. You will now need to locate the telephone box, on the outside of your home. This is where the telephone company has connected its lines to your home. Located in the telephone box there is most likely a side that you will not be able to access. This side of the box is dedicated to the telephone company's lines and is not to be touched. The other side will have the lines that connect to your home's internal wiring. You may also have access to a ground wire. This also is not to be disconnected as you could cause harm to your home's phone equipment or yourself. This line also protects your home's wiring from lightning strikes.

When you have located your side of the telephone box you will see terminals. These terminals are what connect the telephone company's wiring to your home's internal wiring. To disconnect this connection, simply disconnect the telephone wire from its corresponding jack.

Following this work you will want to use electrical tape on the plug that you have unplugged to protect it from damage as well as make it apparent that this was disconnected on purpose. After you have taped each plug you may also want to leave a note in the telephone box warning whoever would see it that they should not reconnect your home phone lines to the telephone company's phone lines.

Finally, make sure that you securely close or latch your telephone box, to make sure it is not tampered with or damaged.
